/////// DECEMBER 2: RHYTHM & VISUAL ///////

WORKSHOP (7-9p): JULIE MALICE

Join multimedia artist Julie Malice (they/them/theirs) for a live-visuals and VJ Workshop. What is a VJ? It’s is an acronym for video-jockey. Much like a DJ, a VJ live mixes video, animation and visual components for a dynamic visual experience. This can be carefully curated and manipulated to provide a visual counterpart harmonious to the music. Visuals are used in large venues and arenas, in night clubs and dance parties, and for theatre and miscellaneous productions.

Julie will demonstrate how to use two software programs for live visuals. The first program CamTwist Studio is a free program that can be utilized for its video streaming, analog-style effects, and as a feeder layer into a separate VJ program called Resolume Arena. This 2nd program demonstrated includes projection-mapping capability, parameters that can be set to modulate based on audio input, ways to animate still images, and lots more. You can also customize a MIDI controller to operate your Resolume set.

Beginners of all types welcome! Feel free to download these programs ahead of time and bring your laptop. Resolume VJ Software has a trial version available.

IN THE WEEDS (9p-12a): SCOUT

Scout (Allison Cosby) is a lover of dub, reggae, and techno music. As an ardent organizer and supporter of multiple nightlife and music collectives, Scout has been a pillar of support to Pittsburgh's dance music community. Having started off as a DJ for WRCT 88.3FM and as one quarter of DETOUR, Scout is also a Co-Founder of girlFx and part of the Hot Mass collective. We always know it's gonna be a good time when Scout is around!

/////// ABOUT ///////
The WORKSHOP (7:30-8:30pm): we've invited local & visiting artist-educators to take inspiration from electronic music pioneers past & present in choosing a piece of gear from the library’s collection to share with you. They will show you the basics, along with some pro-tips & tricks to achieving that sound that may have been stuck in your playlist or between your ears :)

The PLAYGROUND (7-9pm): CLP offers a special selection from their ever-growing instrument collection that you can play with at your own pace. Explore or perfect your skills in a chill atmosphere, and remember, you can always check out this equipment from the library to take home for more fun!

CLP: The Music Department at the CLP – Main Library has a growing collection of musical instruments and gear available for FREE check out and in-house exploration. The collection includes analog and digital synthesizers, drum machines, guitar pedals, microphones, ukuleles, a Moog Theremin and more.
