Apropos Proposal is a textile assemblage created by Jessica Gatlin in 2019, which reinterprets the U.S. flag utilizing the colors and motifs found in watermelon. This flag celebrates sustainability and self-reliance. It rejects shame. And it proposes questions about seeds and seedlessness.
Keeper of the Flag is both the overarching project title and a position currently held by Elizabeth Chodos. The Keeper acts as a steward, partnering with the artist to exhibit and maintain the public life of the flag. Together the keeper and the artist seek out spaces and organizations which serve and/or benefit BIPOC, proposing the flag for public display and dialogue.
About the Artist: Jessica Gatlin is an artist, maker and part-time sorceress based in Baltimore, MD. She received her BFA in Studio Art from Florida State University and MFA from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. She has participated in numerous residencies and fellowships including Ox-Bow School of Art & Artist Residency (Saugatuck, MI), the Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia, PA), and the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts (Wroclaw, PL). An non-disciplinary artist, Gatlin takes a speculative approach pursuing ways to deconstruct and destroy a White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy that has rendered her and many others invisible. Gatlin has recently joined the faculty in the Department of Art at the University of Maryland Assistant Professor of Print & Extended Media.
